The Seville Cathedral is quite immense; in fact, it is the largest in the world. It stands at the location of an Almohad mosque built in the twelfth century. Today, the minaret, known as the Giralda, still stands beside the cathedral. When Seville was taken over by the Christians in 1248, the mosque, until 1401, was utilized as a church before it was knocked down.
The Inglesia de la Magdalena is one of the most amazing baroque churches in Seville. It was built between the years 1961 to 1709. The church is the home of the Quinta Angustia brotherhood. Their Descendimiento tableau from the seventeenth century is carried around throughout the streets of Seville during Semana Santa.
Alcazar was once the home of generations of caliphs and kings. It is much like Alhambra in Granada. It is south of the Seville Cathedral. It was originally created as a fort in 913 but has been rebuilt and expanded for over eleven centuries. Catholic monarchs and Ferdinand and Isabella used Alcazar for their court.
Inside the southern door of the cathedral is the Tomb of Christopher Columbus. There is an elaborate monument that was erected in 1902 in his honor, with four sepulcher-bearers that represent the four kingdoms existing in Spain during the time of Columbus’ voyage in 1492. The tomb holds the bones of Columbus that were brought back in 1899 from the Caribbean.
The Capilla de San Antonio is located inside one of Seville’s many cathedrals. Inside is the canvas created by Murillo in 1666 that depicts the vision of St Anthony of Padua.
Pedro I built the Palacio de Don Pedro inside Alcazar during the 1360s. Mohammed V of Granada, sent Pedro a number of artisans to help (Mohammed V is responsible for building the Palacio de los Leones in Alhambra). It showcases Iberian Islamic art from the time.
